Newsletter - Here's A Quick Way to Add Sparkle |
|
There's something missing, it needs a little

There
is a simple solution to adding a dash of glitz...
Swarovski Crystal Bicone Beads! I add either the 4mm
or 6mm
Swarovski Bicones to my Crystal
Suncatcher creations because one of the wonderful benefits
about Swarovski, is that you don't need a wheelbarrow of beads to
create the bling.
Crystals are formed by a very slow and controlled heat reduction
process. The common materials used during this process are sand
(silica), soda (a form of salt) & lime (burnt limestone).
When trace amounts of metal oxides, opposed to dies, are added
during the heating process, the glass takes on various colours.
The result is that we see the opposite of this colour. E.g. a
small amount of iron oxide (rust) will turn the glass a pale
green, manganese oxide produces red, & if cobalt is added, it
turns the glass blue.
Manufacturing a clear crystal is much more difficult than adding
colour. There can be no impurities during the manufacturing
process as even a small contamination could change the clarity of
the crystal. Once the crystal has formed a solid product, the
crystals are cut using a cutting machine designed by Daniel Swarovski. This machine makes it
possible to cut crystals so they have as many as one hundred
mirrored facets in various directions allowing light to refract,
creating a brilliant array of colors.
Now you know why such a little bead can create such a radiant
beam of sparkle!
