Which Jewellery Hammer Should I Choose?

  • For metal stamping: Choose a brass hammer designed for striking metal stamps. Match the hammer weight to your stamps and metal, following the stamp manufacturer's recommendations.
  • For shaping with less surface marking: Nylon, rawhide and rubber mallets offer softer striking faces for suitable forming tasks. Keep the striking face and work surface clean, and test on scrap metal first.
  • For decorative finishes: Choose a texturing hammer to add patterns to metal blanks and components. Practise on scrap metal to check the effect before working on your finished piece.

Check each tool's intended use, head size and weight before choosing. A mallet for gentle shaping is not a substitute for a hammer designed for metal stamping.
