What is the difference between a jewellery cleaner and a polishing cloth?
Cleaning solutions help remove dirt, oils or tarnish, depending on their formulation. Treated jewellery polishing cloths help remove tarnish and brighten suitable metal surfaces, while untreated cloths are useful for gentle wiping and buffing.
Is it safe to use these cleaners on gold, diamonds or gemstones?
Suitability varies between products. Choose a cleaner specifically recommended for the metal, gemstones and finishes in your piece. Check for restrictions involving plating, treated stones, pearls and glued settings before use.
Do you have a cleaner suitable for pearls or costume jewellery?
Yes. Our Connoisseurs Delicate Jewellery Cleaner is formulated for pearls, costume jewellery and selected delicate stones. Follow the packaging instructions, taking particular care with glued settings and strung pearls.
Can I use an ultrasonic cleaner for all types of jewellery?
No. Pearls, opals, coral and some treated gemstones are unsuitable for ultrasonic cleaning. Loose or fragile settings also require care. Check with your jeweller before using this method if you are unsure. Our ultrasonic cleaning products are solutions and concentrates for use with a suitable machine; we do not sell ultrasonic cleaning machines.
Do polishing cloths leave residue on jewellery?
Some treated polishing cloths leave a slight protective residue to help slow tarnishing. Others have a separate buffing side for removing excess cleaning compound. Follow the instructions for your chosen cloth and check its suitability for plated finishes, gemstones and delicate surfaces.
How often should I clean my jewellery?
This depends on how often you wear it, its materials and the amount of dirt or tarnish present. Follow your jewellery's care instructions and the cleaner's directions rather than using the same cleaning routine for every piece.
